Basic Information
Fernando Alonso Díaz is a 41-year-old Spanish racing driver, born on July 29th, 1981, in Oviedo, Asturias, Spain. He currently races for the Aston Martin F1 Team in Formula 1™.
Early Life and Background
Alonso was born into a working-class family; his father José worked in an explosives factory while his mother Ana was a department store employee. Fernando was introduced to karting by his father at age 3 and immediately showed talent, winning his first karting championship at 8 years old in 1990. He won numerous Spanish junior karting titles throughout the 1990s. In 1999 at age 18, Alonso moved to England to advance his motorsports career, learning English and focusing entirely on racing.
Career Beginnings
Alonso entered Formula Nissan in 2000 and won the championship in his rookie season. In 2001 he graduated to Formula 3000™ and finished 4th in the standings with 1 win. His success caught the attention of Formula 1™ teams. Alonso signed with Minardi and made his Formula 1™ debut in 2001 at just 19 years old, the 3rd youngest F1 driver in history at the time.
Debut Season
Driving for the back marker Minardi team in 2001, Alonso outperformed his teammates in the uncompetitive car. He managed to score his first championship point in the 2001 Hungarian Grand Prix™ with an impressive 10th-place finish. Alonso's outstanding rookie performances led him to sign with Renault as a test driver for 2002.
Teams and Transfers
Alonso raced for Minardi (2001), Renault (2002-2006), McLaren (2007), Renault (2008-2009), Ferrari (2010-2014), and McLaren (2015-2018) before returning to Renault, re-branded as Alpine, in 2021. Alonso had a bitter falling out with McLaren in 2007 over unequal treatment alongside rookie Lewis Hamilton. Tensions also grew between Alonso and Ferrari as he failed to win a title from 2010-2014, leading him to leave for McLaren's struggling effort.
Career Achievements
In his 20 seasons in Formula 1™ so far, Alonso has amassed 2 World Championship™ titles (2005, 2006), 32 race wins, 97 podium finishes, 22 pole positions, and 23 fastest laps. He was the youngest driver to win a Grand Prix at the 2003 Hungarian GP™ for Renault at 22 years old. His back-to-back drivers' titles with Renault in 2005 and 2006 ended Michael Schumacher's 5-year domination of the sport.
Rivalries
Alonso's biggest rivalries have been with Michael Schumacher in the mid-2000s and later Lewis Hamilton at McLaren in 2007. His intense intra-team battle with rookie teammate Hamilton grew toxic, with both drivers level on points but Alonso losing the title by a tiebreak. His on-track battles with 7-time champion Schumacher were regarded as an iconic clash between the aging legend and young star.
Driving Style
Alonso is considered one of the most complete drivers of his generation with an excellent all-around skillset. His key strengths are race craft, tire management, wet weather driving, and tenacious defense of track position. Weaknesses include the qualifying pace in some cars and a tendency to be rough on equipment over long runs. Alonso has a reputation for controversial tactics and using his car aggressively to hold off rivals.
