Basic Information

Charles Leclerc is a Monacan Formula One™ driver, born on October 16, 1997. He currently races with Scuderia Ferrari.

Early Life and Background

Charles Leclerc’s father, Herve Leclerc, was a former Formula 3™ driver back in the 80s and 90s, and he stayed part of the Karting world. Herve was a big part of Charles’ life, being the one to motivate. Even after Herve passed back in 2017, Charles kept going for him. In 2005 his mentor and godfather, Jules Bianchi, a former Formula One™ driver, had given Charles his first run in karting. Jules was also a big part of Charles’ development, of entering the motorsport world.

Career Beginnings

Charles Leclerc embarked on his journey in Karting back in 2005 at age 8. In 2009, he won his first championship and became the youngest French Cadet Champion. When moved up in 2010 to the KF3 class, he won the Junior Monaco Kart Cup.

As his journey to Formula One continued, he made it to single-seaters in 2014. Formula 3™ in 2015, followed by a title in the GP3 Series in 2016. In 2017 he made it into Formula 2™, and at the end of the season won the FIA Formula 2 Championship™. In 2018, he officially got a seat in the Formula One™ World, at 19 years old.

Debut Season

In 2018, Charles Leclerc made his debut at the Australian Grand Prix™, racing with the Alfa Romeo Sauber team. By the end of his debut season, he had 39 points and came 13th in the driver’s championship.

Teams and Transfers

In his Formula One™ career he raced with Alfa Romeo Sauber team in his rookie season, then in 2019 he transferred over to Scuderia Ferrari and continues to race for them.

Career Achievements

Over the length of his career, Charles Leclerc has gotten 29 podium finishes, 23 pole positions, and 5 Grand Prix victories.

Rivalries

Charles Leclerc’s most prominent rivalry is with Red Bull Racing’s, Max Verstappen, having been rivals since their karting days.

Driving Style

Charles Leclerc has said so himself, back during the Belgian Grand Prix™ qualifying press conference earlier this season (2023), “…I have a very aggressive driving style, whether it’s in full wet or full dry, which pays off in those two conditions.” He does exceptionally well in wet races.

Notable Races and Moments

Important moments in Charles Leclerc’s career include his first podium, which occurred in his second race with Scuderia Ferrari, in the 2019 Bahrain Grand Prix™, getting into third place. That same year, Belgian Grand Prix™, he got his first win, an amazing moment for the (at the time) 19-year-old driver.

Another moment is again in 2019, at the Monza Grand Prix™, where he brought home the victory, and became the first Ferrari driver to win at Monza since 2010, back when World Champion, Fernando Alonso won.

Moments this season alone include getting Ferrari their 800th podium finish back during the Austrian Grand Prix™, becoming the first pole sitter for the Las Vegas Grand Prix™ since the last race 40 years ago, and making an amazing overtake at the Grand Prix™, overtaking Sergio “Checo” Perez on the last lap, making Charles P2.

Records and Milestones

Some milestones and records he hit, just in the 2023 season alone, include earning 1000 points in his Formula One™ career, his 100th race with Ferrari, and a (negative) record broken, being the most pole positions without a championship win.

Personality and Off-Track Life

Off-track he likes to play piano and go surfing and skiing. He currently has three piano pieces, that can be found on Spotify and iTunes. His music is named after certain Grand Prix, AUS23, MIA23, and MON23. Those songs are based on the Australian, Miami, and Monaco Grand Prix™ of the 2023 season. He’s a determined, and focused man, and loves those around him. He can be funny without meaning to be.

Fanbase

Charles Leclerc has millions of fans around the world. On his Instagram, he has 13.3 million followers. Monaco, his home country, show big support for him, along with Italy, it being Ferrari’s home race.

Sponsorships and Branding

Some of his sponsors include Richard Mille, Giorgio Armani, Ray-Ban, EA sports, and the Ferrari Driver Academy. He has a distinct personal branding, using red and white on his helmets, the colors of the Monaco Flag.

Charitable Work

Some charity work he has done includes participating in the annual charity football (soccer) match, that is held in Monaco. This 2023 season, he auctioned off his Monaco Grand Prix™ racing gear, raising money for Emilia Romagna, Italy, after they had severe flooding in the area, taking people’s lives, and moving people out of their homes. Charles Leclerc is very active in different charity work and helps as much as he can.

Career Challenges

Anytime he retires from a race, crashes, or doesn’t get the results wanted, those themselves are career challenges. This 2023 season, Ferrari wasn’t in a good position and didn’t have a good livery. At the beginning of the season, Charles himself said “worst ever start of the season,” after he DNF in the first lap of the 2023 Australian Grand Prix™. He had 2 retirements in 3 Grand Prix.

Quotes and Interviews

  • “I am very self-critical when I make a mistake but as part of a team, I try to be very objective and very straight with them, I try to push everybody to have the same approach, to be self-critical and try to learn from it and improve.”

  • “The red car, even before I knew it was called Ferrari, was my obsession.”

  • “I like the danger, I like the adrenaline and I need it to race.”

Future Prospects

He wants to win the World Championship™ alongside his current team, Scuderia Ferrari.

Trivia and Fun Facts

  • When he joined Ferrari, at 21 years old, he became Ferrari’s youngest driver ever.

  • He originally wanted his driver number to be 7, but since it was taken, he chose 16 because 1 and 6 added, equals 7, and it’s his birthdate.

  • He has the highest amount of pole positions (23) with no championship win.

Legacy in F1

When Leclerc joined Ferrari, he was considered “the future of Scuderia Ferrari.” His full legacy has yet to be determined, as we wait for his first championship win.
