Team History
The name “Mercedes” is derived from Mercedes Jellinek, the daughter of Emil Jellinek, a businessman and automobile dealer who was heavily involved with the early development of Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG), the predecessor of Mercedes-Benz.
The Silver Arrows refer to the iconic silver racing cars fielded by Mercedes-Benz in the 1930s. The story goes that the W25 Grand Prix car was overweight for a race in 1934. To meet the weight regulations, the team removed the white paint from the car, exposing the silver aluminum body beneath. The car went on to win, and the Silver Arrows were born.
Mercedes’ legacy in Formula One™ includes a dominant era in the hybrid power unit era, breaking records for consecutive Constructors’ Championships and producing some of the sport’s greatest drivers, such as Lewis Hamilton. The team has established itself as one of the most successful and influential in F1 history.
The Mercedes-AMG Petronas Formula One™ Team, commonly known as Mercedes, has its roots in the original Mercedes-Benz racing efforts of the early 20th century. The modern team was officially founded in 2010 when Mercedes-Benz acquired the championship-winning Brawn GP team.
The team’s initial entry into Formula 1™ as a works team was in 1954, with Juan Manuel Fangio winning the Drivers’ Championship™ in the iconic W196 car. Mercedes withdrew from F1 after the 1955 season but returned as an engine supplier in the 1990s before becoming a full works team again in 2010.
Significant milestones include winning the Constructors’ Championship™ in 2014 and achieving unprecedented success in the hybrid era with multiple Constructors’ and Drivers’ Championships™.
