Basic Information
Born in Finland, Valtteri Bottas is a 34-year-old Finnish Formula One™ Driver, born on August 28, 1989.
Early Life and Background
Unlike other drivers, neither of his parents were part of the driving world, his father owning a small cleaning company and his mother, an undertaker. At the age of six, he got behind the wheel, racing his first kart. He learned his craft on the icy roads of Finland.
Career Beginnings
After getting a spark of interest in motorsports and beginning to race with karts at the age of six, he moved up as time went on. In 2005, he finished 8th in the Karting World Cup™ for the P.D.B. In 2008 Bottas won the Formula Renault Eurocup™ and Formula Renault Northern European Cup™. After that between 2008 and 2009, Bottas took a break from racing for joining the military, which is mandatory for adult males in Finland to join.
Debut Season
Bottas made his debut in F1 with Williams, back in 2013. His debut occurred at the Australian Grand Prix™, making him the ninth Finnish driver in the sport. In his debut season he only had one point-finish victory, finishing eighth in the second to last race of the season, the United States Grand Prix™, earning him 4 points for the season.
Teams and Transfers
From 2013-2016 he drove for Williams. In 2017 he transferred to Mercedes and stayed with them until 2021. In 2022 he moved over to his current team, Alfa Romeo, and currently has a contract with them until the end of 2024.
Career Achievements
When he made the move to Mercedes, he finally got his first F1 win, at the 2017 Russian Grand Prix™. While with Mercedes he earned 10 Grand Prix wins, and 20 pole positions. He has a total of 67 podiums in his career and 1797 points.

During his time in Mercedes, his main rival was former teammate, Lewis Hamilton. Currently, he’s been racing in the lower field, so his main rivals are his teammate, Zhou Guanyu, the Haas drivers, Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg, and the Williams drivers, Alex Albon and Logan Sargeant.

His driving style is seen as smooth. When in Mercedes he was seen as being fast, but with being in Alfa Romeo his performance in speed has gone down.

Career Challenges
Throughout his career, he has struggled with his mental health. When he drove for Mercedes, he found it exhausting trying to keep up with his teammate at the time, World Champion Lewis Hamilton. When with Williams he had no wins and struggled to get points, especially in his debut season. With Alfa Romeo, he is happier than he was with Mercedes, but he isn’t performing as well.
