Basic Information

Nico Erik Hülkenberg is a 35-year-old German racing driver, born 19 August 1987 in Emmerich am Rhein, Germany. He competed in Formula 1™ full-time from 2010 to 2020, racing for Williams, Force India, Sauber, Renault, and Racing Point. He is currently racing for Haas, Racing Point F1 team.

Early Life and Background

Hülkenberg was born into a racing family, with his father Peter being a successful German kart racer in the 1980s. Nico began karting himself at age 10 and worked his way up through the German junior karting ranks, winning the German Junior Karting Championship™ in 2002 at age 15. His family made huge sacrifices to fund his path into single-seaters.

Career Beginnings

Hülkenberg transitioned to single-seater racing in 2005 in the Formula BMW ADAC™ series, finishing 5th. In 2006 he moved up to the A1 Grand Prix™ series, followed by Formula 3™ from 2007-2008. He won the Formula 3 Euro Series™ title in 2008, propelling him into becoming a test driver for Williams F1 in 2009.

Debut Season

Driving for Williams in 2010 alongside veteran Rubens Barrichello, Hülkenberg scored points on his debut by finishing seventh in Bahrain. At the Brazilian GP™, he shocked by claiming pole position in a wet qualifying. He finished 14th in the championship in his rookie season.

Teams and Transfers

Hülkenberg raced for Williams (2010), Force India (2011-2012, 2014-2016), Sauber (2013), Renault (2017-2019), and Racing Point (2020). Despite standout performances for midfield teams, he was never able to land a coveted seat with a top team like Ferrari or Mercedes.

Career Achievements

Across 179 F1 starts over 10 seasons from 2010-2020, Hülkenberg amassed 1 pole position, 2 fastest laps, and 521 points. He came close to podium finishes many times but was plagued by bad luck and mistakes. His best championship finish was 7th with Force India in 2016.

Rivalries

Notable Races and Moments

Shock pole position at Brazil 2010, Led 2012 Brazilian Grand Prix™ before a spin ended hopes for his first podium, Back-to-back 7th places as an emergency substitute for Racing Point at Silverstone 2020.

Personality and Off-Track Life

Known for his blunt honesty, Hülkenberg is regarded as efficient and businesslike in his approach, befitting his German roots. Off-track he enjoys soccer, DJing house music, collecting luxury cars, and sampling fine wines from his extensive collection.

Fanbase

Despite lacking major success, Hülkenberg has retained a dedicated fanbase from his time in F1's midfield. His loyalty and persistence earned respect, with supporters cheering him on as the underdog. His popularity rose sharply after stellar substitute drives in 2020.
