Basic Information

Kevin Magnussen is a 30-year-old Danish racing driver, born on 5 October 1992 in Roskilde, Denmark. He competed in Formula 1™ from 2014-2020, took a one-year break, and returned to drive for Haas F1 in 2022.

Early Life and Background

Born to former F1 driver Jan Magnussen and wife Annette, Kevin was immersed in racing from a very young age. He competed in karting against future F1 rivals like Romain Grosjean and Nico Hülkenberg as a teenager. His family made huge sacrifices to fund his career.

Career Beginnings

Magnussen won the Formula Renault 2.0 Northern European Cup™ in 2008 and later the British Formula 3™ title in 2009. In 2013 he won the Formula Renault 3.5™ series, which propelled him onto the Formula 1™ radar. He joined McLaren's young driver program ahead of his F1 debut.

Debut Season

Driving for McLaren in 2014 alongside veteran Jenson Button, Magnussen scored a podium finish on his very first race in Australia. He recorded several other point hauls, finishing the season 11th overall with 55 points.

Teams and Transfers

Magnussen has raced for McLaren (2014), Renault (2016 as reserve), and Haas (2017-2020, 2022-present). He left each team when contracts expired, aside from Haas releasing him in 2020 for financial reasons.

Career Achievements

Across 6 seasons in F1 so far, Magnussen has earned 1 pole position, 1 fastest lap, and 276 championship points. At the 2022 Brazilian Grand Prix™, he secured the first-ever podium finish for Haas with third place.

Rivalries

Magnussen had intense rivalries early in his career with fellow young guns like Nico Hülkenberg, Sergio Perez, and Romain Grosjean. In recent years he has not had high-profile rivalries.

Driving Style

Considered an aggressive and bold overtaker, Magnussen drives in a passionate but erratic style. Defending track position is his strong suit, but he has been criticized for unsafe maneuvers.

Notable Races and Moments

Shock pole position in rain-hit qualifying at 2014 Australian GP™, First ever Haas podium with 3rd place at 2022 Brazilian GP™.

Records and Milestones

At the 2014 Australian Grand Prix™, Magnussen became the youngest Danish F1 driver in history at age 21 years, and 267 days old.

Personality and Off-Track Life

Fairly reserved and private off-track, Magnussen enjoys endurance racing, spending time with wife Louise and their two daughters, and doing farm work at the family residence.

Fanbase

As Denmark's only current F1 driver, Magnussen receives strong domestic support. He is also well-known among dedicated racing fans for his aggressive driving style.

Sponsorships and Branding

Sponsored by brands like Dixcel, Isoclima, and Alpinestars. His helmet designs incorporate the colors of the Danish flag.

Charitable Work

Magnussen has made visits to orphanages in Mexico as part of Grand Prix-related charity programs. He has also supported campaigns against illegal street racing.

Career Challenges

Despite early promise with McLaren, Magnussen struggled for years to retain race seats and spent time in slower cars before the Haas opportunity arose in 2022.

Quotes and Interviews

"When the helmet is on, the visor is down, I'm a different guy."

Future Prospects

After returning to F1 with Haas in 2022 on a multi-year deal, Magnussen aims to help further develop their car and fight reliably in F1's competitive midfield.
